Applying to Medical School? There’s an App for That

USMLE

Successfully applying for medical school has never been an easy task. But it just got a little simpler, thanks to a team of enterprising med school students. David Eisenberg, a student at Commonwealth Medical College in Scranton, PA, and Peter Malamas, who is studying at New York’s NYU School of Medicine, recently created PreMD Tracker, a smartphone app that allows pre-med students to monitor their application process.

“When I was going through college, I was in the dark about the application process, “Eisenberg recently told reporters with the Times Leader in Wilkes-Barre, PA. “I had an advisor who had other students to help and had I known how to track my progress, it would have been a much easier process.”

To help out the next class of applicants, the two designed the app to help students track the three primary categories that define the application process – academics, activities and letters. For instance, users can check off required courses as they complete them, monitor their GPA, and log time spent volunteering, conducting research and gaining clinical experience. Each category tab features tips and links that offer advice on issues like securing letters of recommendation and additional classes that may prove beneficial. Progress in each of the categories is color-coded. Green means a student is on track, while red means he’s slacking.

After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh and John Hopkins University, Eisenberg and Malamas took a year off from their medical studies to indulge their interest in technology and fill a clearly defined need. Malamas learned how to write code for the application while Eisenberg worked on marketing and design.

“When we were applying for medical school everything felt disorganized and we were constantly feeling our way through the dark,” Eisenberg said. “It was a problem that needed to be fixed and we came up with the solution.”

But what about the prep work to help students pass the required USMLE or COMLEX exams? WOLFPACC has an app for that – though not an electronic one. Based in St. Augustine, Florida with satellite campuses in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, WOLFPACC teaches students a revolutionary, streamlined approach to practicing medicine. Students are taught to better understand medicine through high yield concepts rather than simply memorizing and recalling exam information. Plus, the four-week Pre-Med Head Start course gives students a preview of much of the curriculum they’ll encounter in the first year of medical school.
