Family Medicine Tops List of Most In-Demand Specialties

The much discussed physician shortage, predicted to surpass 120,000 by 2032 according to the Association of American Medical Colleges, paired with the upswing in the US economy throughout 2019 represent enormous opportunity for medical students. But where are is that opportunity the richest? Per a recent survey by Doximity, it’s in the family, internal and emergency medicine specialties.

The study, based on some 27,000 physician jobs posted on Doximity.com, an online networking service for medical professionals, analyzed data on the top 50 metropolitan statistical areas and the most common medical specialties. More than 402,000 jobs were added in the healthcare sector in the 12 months ending with the third quarter of 2019. Among growth figures reported was a 5-percent uptick in demand for physicians in the top 10 metropolitans.

Researchers found that the 10 most in-demand specialties are:

  2. Internal Medicine

  4. Psychiatry
  5. Obstetrics & Gynecology
  6. Neurology
  7. Radiology
  8. Anesthesiology
  9. Pediatrics
  10. Cardiology
