Top Medical Schools for Landing Your First-Choice Residency

USMLE

Upon completing four years of medical school, aspiring physicians typically move on to the next, arguably most challenging phase of their training – completing a residency. This step involves an undergraduate’s initial practice of medicine, usually in a hospital or clinic, under the supervision of an attending physician.

But as competitive as it might be for many students to secure a spot in their first-choice medical schools, the competition for the most coveted residency programs can prove even tougher. That’s why it’s highly recommended that prospective students choose their schools based in part on their residency placement rates and practices. US News and World Report recently released a list of its top ranked medical schools where 2017 graduates were most likely to match with their first choice residency program. Here are the leading five, along with the number of students who applied for residencies and the percentage of them who were admitted to their first choice residencies.

  1. Nova Southeastern University Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine, Fort Lauderdale, FL: 232 applied, 100 percent admitted to first choice residency.
  2. Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Virginia, Carolinas and Auburn: 345 applied, 93.04 percent admitted to first choice residency.
  3. Des Moines University, Iowa: 212 admitted, 83.96 admitted to first choice residency.
  4. West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, Lewisburg.
  5. William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Hattiesburg, MS: 92 applied, 77.17 percent admitted to first choice residency.
