Think you’ve got plenty of time to work on your medical school application? Well, you do. As of May 1, medical colleges and universities nationwide are accepting applications for the Fall 2020 semester start. Deadlines run from this coming October to as late as next February. But if you’re anxious to get the ball rolling, there are plenty of reasons to submit your applications early. Other than coming across as motivated and highly organized – both important traits getting the attention of decision makers – here are four practical reasons to move quickly.
- You’ll skip ahead of the grade verification line: The application process isn’t complete until the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) verifies the grades listed on your transcripts – And that can take time. Applying in early May means your grades should be verified by early June. Thus, your application will be far ahead of the verification request rush that happens every July and August.
- You’ll get more recommendation letters: The May med school application opening coincides with the busy exam season. If you haven’t yet asked your professors or other school administrators for reference letters, you may be out of luck.
- You’ll get first choice of interview days: Applying early places you in the front of the line when it comes to scheduling medical school interviews. This is important when you’re juggling applications to multiple schools and the travel that those options may call for.
- You’ll have time to perfect your secondary applications and answer questions: Completing successful secondary applications can take time – perhaps even longer than your initial applications, as they typically call for multiple essays. Starting the process early means more time to craft a perfect response to secondary application requests and to answer additional questions that screeners may have about you and your experience.
