New Year's Resolutions for Pre-Med Students

January 5, 2015

It's official - 2015 has begun, and so has the New Year's resolution writing frenzy. It's a great time to reflect on the accomplishments of year behind us and the goals for the coming months. St. Augustine, Florida's WOLFPACC offers these suggestions for resolutions sure to benefit medical students nationwide.

  1. Resolve to consider all your options: The coming shortage of physicians in America means lots of opportunityfor med students. While choosing and focusing on a particular type of medicine you aim to practice is important, it's also a good idea to keep your options open. For instance, if oncology is your primary interest, consider pediatric oncology - one of the specialties in particular need of new doctors.
  2. Resolve to get some exposure: Getting a bit of clinical experience will help give you a real-world glimpse into your chosen profession. Plus, it looks great on your medical school applications. Volunteer at a local clinic or hospital that serves low-income communities; ask to shadow your family physician for a semester or sign up for a formal premedical program that involves interacting with working physicians.
  3. Resolve to quit procrastinating on your med school applications: Most US medical schools accept applications via the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) beginning early June each year, and each of those applications must undergo an initial review and verification that can take six weeks or more. Meanwhile, the nation's top medical schools have limited numbers of interview spots. Waiting assures you'll miss out on the chance to nab one of those coveted appointments. Begin preparing your applications now so you're ready to hit the ground running come June 1.
  4. Resolve to get the competitive edge: Despite growing opportunity, the study and practice of medicine remain highly competitive. Programs like WOLFPACC's Pre Med Head Start help you get the competitive edge by giving you a preview of the medical school environment. And, its USMLE and COMLEX preparation courses help assure you'll rock your exams.
