Retired military veterans often are nowhere near ready to retire altogether. In fact, many complete their military service early in their lives, using the experience, knowledge and discipline they gained to begin challenging new civilian careers. Because defending the lives of their fellow soldiers and Americans as a whole is so engrained in their minds and hearts, many veterans unsurprisingly opt for post-service medical careers. If you’re among them,WOLFPACC offers these tips to best prepare for medical school success:
- Research military-friendly medical schools: More specifically, seek out medical schools that participate in the US Department of Veterans Affairs Yellow Ribbon Program. If you have at least 90 days of aggregate active duty service performed since Sept. 10, 2001 and are still on active duty, or if you are an honorably discharged veteran or were discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days, you may be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill and its Yellow Ribbon Program. If so, you may be eligible for higher levels of tuition and fees coverage for attending medical school.
- Highlight your military service: Though the demand for skilled physicians of all specialties is expected to rise over the next decades, particularly as the Baby Boomers hit retirement age, competition for medical school slots will remain fierce. But while many of your competitors will be young undergraduates with little real-world experience, your military service is as real-world as it gets. Veterans are regarded as being highly disciplined, dedicated, respected and respectful workers with experience in high-stakes, life-and-death situations – all of which translates to working in the medical field.
- Prepare: If there’s one thing military veterans know about its preparation. And if you’ve spent time on the battlefield, you know that being even a little more prepared than your opponent can make all the difference in the world. For veterans considering medical school, WOLFPACC’s Pre Med Head Start, USMLE Review Prep andCOMLEX Prep courses can help assure you’re well prepared for the medical school environment and passing the required examinations to secure your medical license.
We here at WOLFPACC strongly support America’s military veterans and take special pride in helping them begin new medical careers in the civilian world. If you’re a m
