Telemedicine on the Rise

USMLE

The continued advancement of global communications technology is paving the way for unprecedented growth in the field of telemedicine, the remote diagnosis and treatment of patients via telecommunications. According to a recent survey by Doximity, an online networking service for medical professionals, the industry has grown by some 20 percent each year from 2015 to 2018. It’s one of the fastest-growing sectors of the healthcare market.

Contrary to popular belief, telemedicine is not a new concept – Far from it, in fact. It actually dates back to the Civil War, when casualties and injuries were reported, medical supplies were ordered and consultations were conducted via the telegraph, telephone and radio. An 1879 report published in The Lancet, one of the world’s oldest, most prestigious, and best known general medical journals, discussed how using the telephone could reduce the number of unnecessary office visits.

Doximity’s report reveals that the medical specialties currently offering the most opportunity in telemedicine are:

  1. Internal Medicine
  2. Psychiatry
  3. Radiology
  4. Family Medicine
  5. Pediatrics
  6. Emergency Medicine
  7. Neurology
  8. Cardiology
  9. Obstetrics & Gynecology
  10. Dermatology
